Would you believe that it rains in the northwest?

The morning was nice so we went for a hike. We hiked up Thunder Knob, about four miles round trip, with some very nice views of the mountains. We noticed the clouds moving in, so got back to the campsite, packed, and got the on the road 30 minutes before the rain started.

And the rain continued all the way down to Monroe where we got on highway 2 to head back over the mountains. That's where it started to let up and then eventually peter out.

On the east side of the Cascades we rode through Leavenworth - the Bavarian town in Washington.

Everything here has a bavarian theme - even Starbucks and McDonalds. More of a place to spend a day with the wife rather than riding buddy, so we passed through quickly onto Highway 97 south to Ellensburg. This section of highway has long sweepers, nice scenery and smooth pavement. On the downslope we encountered more deer - a doe and several fawns. Thanks to the outstanding breaks on the FJR, they did not pose a problem.

The next highlight of our trip is the Yakima River Canyon, aka 821. This is a bypass from the interstate which snakes its way through a very dry BLM canyon for 40 miles or so, at 45mph. It was in here that we camped. We put our two remaining beer bottles in a bag in the river, set up camp in the winds, picked up lots of trash from prior inhabitants, and slept.
